放送から四半世紀を経た現在も、世界中に熱狂的なファンを持つアニメ『serial experiments lain』(1998年放送)。本作にてDJ “JJ”役として声優出演し、劇中音楽を担当した竹本晃と共にアニメサウンドトラック『Cyberia Mix』を手がけたWASEI “JJ” CHIKADAによる、思索的かつ実験的な音響作品。作品タイトルにもなっている“シューマン共鳴”は、『serial experiments lain』において中核的な概念として描かれ、いまなお多くのファンに記憶されている。その〈電脳と意識の共鳴〉というコンセプトを、構造的かつ音響的に再解釈したのが本作『Schumann Resonance』である。本作は、地球と電離層のあいだに生じる自然振動「シューマン共鳴」の周期性をテーマに、耳には聴こえない構造を音として可視化することを試みた、抽象音楽/アブストラクトビート作品。20世紀初頭の構成主義に学び、感情や装飾を抑制しながら、「周期」と「揺らぎ」によって構築された音響空間が展開される。
Even more than a quarter century after its original broadcast in 1998, the anime *serial experiments lain* continues to captivate devoted fans around the world. In the series, WASEI “JJ” CHIKADA voiced the enigmatic DJ “JJ” and, together with composer Akira Takemoto, co-produced the official soundtrack *Cyberia Mix*. Now, he presents a new sonic work that is both contemplative and experimental in nature.
The title of this release, *Schumann Resonance*, draws from a core concept featured in *serial experiments lain*, where it symbolized the resonance between the digital and the conscious. This work revisits that idea—reinterpreting it structurally and sonically for the present.
The album takes as its theme the periodic natural oscillations known as the Schumann resonances, which occur between the Earth’s surface and the ionosphere. Seeking to render this inaudible structure audible, *Schumann Resonance* unfolds as a work of abstract music and conceptual beat. Inspired by early 20th-century Constructivism, the piece restrains emotion and ornamentation, instead building its sonic architecture through cycles and fluctuations.
